The G-100, a prominent coalition of 100 opposition politicians, scholars, and civil society advocates pushing for a consensus presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections, issued a firm charge to opposition leaders on Sunday, August 30, 2026, urging them to prioritize national interest and strategic cooperation over personal political ambitions.
The declaration comes ahead of the Summit of Opposition Political Parties, scheduled for Monday, August 31, 2026, at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.
The summit aims to gather key political actors, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra Governor Peter Obi, House Minority Leader Frederick Agbedi, and leaders across the PDP, LP, ADC, and other parties, to build a unified political framework to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a public statement signed by G-100 spokesperson and former APC Deputy National Chairman (North-West) Salihu Moh. Lukman, alongside prominent political stakeholders including former House member Nnena Ukeje, former Kogi Deputy Governor Simon Achuba, public affairs analyst Prof. Anthony Kila, and former House member Sergius Ogun, the group warned that continued fragmentation within the opposition risks handing an automatic victory to the incumbent government.
“Historical evidence repeatedly demonstrates that a divided opposition hands an unintended advantage to the incumbent,” Lukman stated.
“The hour is far too grave for scattered ambition and private calculation. Cooperation does not require any party to surrender its identity or leaders to abandon their aspirations, it simply requires the wisdom to recognize that what unites us must become more important than what separates us.”
The coalition stressed that Monday’s summit should serve as the starting line for a structured dialogue rather than an internal power struggle.
Key proposals on the table for the upcoming deliberations include:- Consensus Standard-Bearer; Developing an agreed-upon mechanism to select a single presidential candidate and running mate for the 2027 polls.
A Unified Electoral Strategy; Establishing a joint technical committee to coordinate campaign resources, policy platforms, and grassroots mobilization and Reaffirming the principles of the Ibadan Declaration to ensure post-election political stability and shared governance.
The G-100 reiterated that its goal is not to endorse a specific aspirant, but to preserve democratic accountability and ensure Nigerian voters are presented with a formidable, credible alternative at the ballot box.
