The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) announced on Thursday, September 10, 2026, a grassroots fundraising strategy aimed at raising campaign funds directly from ordinary citizens to curb the influence of wealthy individuals and government treasuries in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an official briefing at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja, the NDC’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, stated that the party is asking everyday Nigerians to contribute modest sums, such as ₦1,000 or ₦2,000, to support its nationwide operations.
“As a new party without a president, governors, ministers, or other holders of public office, the task of building and sustaining our movement poses an existential challenge,” Director said. “Our party is funded not by stolen funds from government treasuries at any level, but by transparent donations, levies, and contributions from members, stakeholders, and well-wishers.”
The party leadership emphasized that the move is both a practical necessity and a strategic attempt to democratize political campaign financing in Nigeria. Open micro-donations allowing ordinary citizens to contribute directly to party accounts, reducing dependency on single high-net-worth individual financiers.
The NDC assured the public that all voluntary contributions and levies will be receipted, managed through designated party bank accounts, and fully audited in compliance with Electoral Act guidelines. The party reiterated that key tickets, including presidential and vice-presidential nominations, are being made available without ticket-sale charges to promote meritocracy.
Addressing recent political opposition claims surrounding internal party levies, the spokesperson defended the party’s leadership, including National Leader Senator Seriake Dickson, confirming that no individual leadership figures collect or handle donations personally.
The NDC urged members of the public and the media to rely exclusively on official party channels for verified information as preparations for the 2027 polls gather momentum.
