The national leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly condemned an alleged attack on its members during a voter sensitization meeting in Enugu State, warning that intimidation will not impede its participation in the 2027 general elections.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:40 p.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2026, during a grassroots mobilization gathering held in Ndiuno-Obuoffia, Obuoffia Ward, located within Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State. Armed hoodlums opened fire on the attendees, leaving at least one person wounded as party faithful and local residents dispersed in panic.

Reacting to the assault in an official press statement released late Sunday evening, September 13, 2026, the NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, described the violent disruption as an unprovoked attack and an affront to constitutional freedoms.

”This incessant assault on our members by state-sponsored thugs must stop,” Director stated. “As a registered political party, we have every constitutional right to participate in the democratic process through peaceful assembly. No amount of intimidation will silence this constitutionally guaranteed assembly.

“No one can prevent the NDC from exercising its right to democratic participation in the 2027 general elections,” Director stated, describing the assault as a desperate attempt by opposition elements to suppress democratic engagement in the region.

Following the incident, the Enugu State Police Commissioner, Mamman Giwa, ordered a full-scale investigation into the violent disruption alongside related security breaches in Nkanu West LGA, vowing to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
