Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has openly questioned the sincerity of 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi regarding his frequent outreach visits and birthday celebrations at Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps across the country.

Speaking during a media session in Abuja on Friday, October 16, 2026, Wike suggested that politicians frequently use performative displays of compassion to manipulate public emotion ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Wike directly challenged Obi’s public persona of humility, accusing him of adopting humanitarian gestures solely to court votes.

The minister likened Obi’s IDP camp visits to traditional political gimmicks, such as politicians buying street snacks like roasted corn in public or making televised stops at filling stations to talk about fuel prices.

Wike advised the public not to listen to “gamblers” and urged Nigerians to evaluate political figures based on their past governance records rather than temporary campaign optics.

”Politicians can tell lies. A man who did not celebrate his birthday when he was a governor now wants to be president and wants to celebrate his birthday in IDP camps? And you say, ‘Oh, he is very humble.’ Which humility is that? Who are you deceiving?”
Nyesom Wike asserted.

Addressing broader national concerns during the media interaction, Wike acknowledged the economic and security pressures facing the nation but urged citizens to consider the progress made by the current administration.

Wike maintained that the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu is actively addressing inherited challenges. He noted that ongoing infrastructure developments, particularly across the FCT, demonstrate real performance over political theater.

As of the time of reporting, Peter Obi and his official spokesperson, Yunusa Tanko, have not issued a formal rebuttal to Wike’s latest remarks.

However, representatives from the Obi-Datti Media Office have previously maintained that Obi’s charity work, educational donations, and visits to displaced communities are part of a long-standing personal commitment to philanthropy rather than political strategy.

This exchange marks the latest flashpoint in the ongoing political maneuvering as key figures position themselves and build their narratives ahead of the 2027 presidential election cycle.
