Sixteen passengers have died in a road crash that occurred in Kano on Thursday night, injuring 14 others.

In a  statement on Friday – today, February 14 –  CRS Abdullahi Labaran, the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps in the state, disclosed that the crash occurred at approximately 9.50 last night.

According to the statement, the crash occurred precisely along the Kano-Maiduguri Road, under the Muhammadu Buhari Interchange Flyover, Hotoro.

It explained that the crash involved a total of 71 passengers among whom 52 were injured .

The statement disclosed that the  preliminary crash report  indicated that it involved an overspeeding trailer (DAF Model) carrying goods and passengers at the time of the crash.

It specifically stated that the excess speed resulted in loss of control of the vehicle under the bridge and the subsequent accident that occurred.

In the meantime, the injured victims have been evacuated to the Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, Kano, for urgent medical attention while the police have cleared the scene,” the statement added.

“In response to the tragic incident, the Sector Commander, FRSC Kano Sector Command, CC UM Matazu, dispatched an investigation team to conduct a thorough inquiry into the crash,” said Labaran.

“He has also extended his deep condolences to the families of the deceased and prays for the quick recovery of the injured victims while warning drivers and the general public against overloading trailers with goods, animals, and passengers.”

He warned that such dangerous driving significantly increases the risk of fatal crashes even as he emphasized the FRSC’s commitment to ensuring safety on the nation’s roads.
