Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has approved the immediate commencement of direct payment of monthly statutory allocations to the accounts of the state’s 27 local government areas.
The development was disclosed on Tuesday by the Deputy Governor, Umar Kadafur, after presiding over the inauguration of the newly elected local government council chairmen in Maiduguri.
Kadafur said the decision underscored the Zulum administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and promoting transparency at the grassroots level.
According to him, the governor’s approval aligns with the Supreme Court judgment granting financial autonomy to local governments, as well as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive issued in December 2025, which urged all state governors to ensure direct disbursement of allocations to councils nationwide.
“The governor has given clear approval for local governments in Borno State to begin receiving their statutory allocations directly into their respective accounts,” Kadafur stated.
He noted that the policy would enhance service delivery, improve accountability, and empower council administrations to effectively address the needs of their communities.
The deputy governor urged the newly inaugurated chairmen to manage public funds prudently and focus on projects that would have direct impact on the lives of residents at the grassroots.
The inauguration ceremony marked the formal commencement of the new local government administrations across the 27 councils in the state.
