In a telephone conversation with the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday (Wednesday, October 9), US President, Joe Biden reiterated Israel’s right to defend itself against Hezbollah, which has launched thousands of missiles into Israel in the past year.

He, however, stressed the importance of minimizing civilian casualties, particularly in densely populated areas like Beirut.

This call, the first between Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu since August, highlighted Biden’s strong commitment to Israel’s security and included a condemnation of Iran’s missile attacks on the Jewish State.

The conversation also touched on the humanitarian situation in Gaza, with Biden emphasizing the urgent need to renew diplomatic efforts to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas and restore access to northern Gaza through Jordan.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre provided little clarity on Israel’s potential responses to Iran, stating that specific details were not being disclosed.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant warned that attacks on Israel would lead to significant retaliation, ensuring that the response would be both precise and surprising.

Amid concerns about a possible escalation of Israel’s military operations in Lebanon, Jean-Pierre stressed that the U.S. aims to prevent a humanitarian crisis similar to that in Gaza from occurring in Lebanon.

Netanyahu, in a statement directed at the Lebanese people, urged them to reclaim their country from Hezbollah to avoid a prolonged conflict that could lead to widespread destruction and suffering.
