The Executive Director of YIAGA Africa, Samson Itodo, has strongly condemned the rising trend of premature political campaigns ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, calling it a blatant violation of electoral laws and a threat to democratic stability.
Speaking during a media briefing in Abuja, Itodo criticized political actors for disregarding the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) guidelines on campaign timelines. He warned that the early commencement of political campaigns not only undermines the rule of law but also distracts public officials from governance and service delivery.
“It is unacceptable that barely two years after the last general elections, politicians have resumed campaign activities in clear violation of the Electoral Act,” Itodo stated. “This shows a lack of respect for institutions and processes designed to protect our democracy.”
The YIAGA boss called on INEC to take decisive action by enforcing existing provisions of the Electoral Act and applying stiffer penalties against violators. He stressed that failure to act would embolden impunity and weaken public trust in the electoral system.
Itodo also urged citizens, civil society groups, and the media to hold political actors accountable and resist attempts to derail democratic norms. He emphasized that stronger institutional response was necessary to ensure that political office holders remain focused on fulfilling their mandates rather than engaging in premature politicking.
“The integrity of our elections is not just about what happens on election day. It’s about strict adherence to the rules from start to finish,” he added.
YIAGA Africa, a leading civic organization promoting democratic governance, has been at the forefront of electoral reforms and voter education in Nigeria. The group pledged to continue monitoring the political space and working with stakeholders to safeguard democratic principles as the 2027 elections approach.
