The Governing Council of Yakubu Gowon University, formerly the University of Abuja, has approved the promotion of 34 academic staff to professorial ranks across various disciplines.

The Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Mr Habib Yakoob, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja. He said 17 academics were promoted to the rank of Professor, while another 17 attained the rank of Associate Professor following favourable external assessment reports on their scholarly publications.

Yakoob said the promotions, ratified at the Governing Council’s meeting held on July 10 and 11, cut across disciplines including community medicine, veterinary medicine, engineering, religious studies, accounting, business administration, physics and banking and finance. He added that the promotions take effect from October 2026.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi, congratulated the promoted academics, describing the elevation as recognition of their dedication to scholarship and academic excellence. He said the university would continue to strengthen its promotion processes to ensure deserving staff were recognised in line with established guidelines.
