The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has revealed that 3,767 people lost their lives, while 22,373 people were injured between January and September, as a result of road crashes.
FRSC Deputy Corps Marshal on Policy, Research and Statistics, Clement Oladele, at a press briefing in Abuja, said the global plan of action for the United Nations Decade of Road Safety 2021 to 2030 calls for a holistic, safe system approach to halve road traffic deaths by 2030.
Oladele also announced that the Corps plans to purchase choppers for patrol operations through private public partnership.
In addition, he said FRSC would also purchase air ambulances as well as drones to aid its patrol duties.
On his part, FRSC Deputy Corps Marshal, Training Department, Chidiebere Nkwonta disclosed that the Corps is training all relevant officers at all levels of the corps in preparedness for the upcoming ember months operation.
Speaking on Operation, Assistant Corps Marshal, Hyginus Omeje fingered speeding as the major cause of accidents in the country, urging all hands on deck to ensure the ember months are accident-free.
He assured that more equipment to aid operations activities have been purchased.
Earlier FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, identified road traffic crashes as the seventh cause of human deaths globally, and the number one cause of death of youths in Africa, noting that the youth must be protected for the country to have a future.
He, however, assured that continuous enlightenment exercises would be put in place to train drivers in parks to shun drink-driving, which is a major cause of road crashes in Nigeria.
