The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed his commitment to sealing buildings of ground rent defaulters in Abuja, issuing a stern warning during his monthly media parley on Monday, August 4. Wike emphasized that despite multiple grace periods, including a 14-day extension granted by President Bola Tinubu in May 2025, over 9,000 defaulters have failed to settle outstanding rents, some dating back 10 to 43 years. He dismissed blackmail attempts as ineffective, stating, “I laugh, and it’s unfortunate… no amount of blackmail will stop us,” and confirmed that the FCT Administration will proceed with sealing properties, including those of prominent defaulters like the PDP national secretariat, to recover the debts and fund infrastructure development.
