The National Assembly (NASS) has clarified that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, cannot immediately resume plenary following recent legal and procedural issues surrounding her seat.
In a statement on Monday, officials explained that the Senate is obliged to await the conclusion of all legal processes and administrative clearances before formally admitting her back to legislative duties.
Senator Natasha, who was declared winner of the 2023 Kogi Central senatorial election after a series of tribunal and appellate court rulings, has faced delays in fully resuming her legislative responsibilities. The development has sparked reactions from her supporters, who insist she has a valid mandate.
A source within the Assembly leadership disclosed that the delay is not politically motivated but a matter of due process. “Every senator must go through proper documentation, clearance, and confirmation before taking part in plenary. Until this is finalized, she cannot resume officially,” the source said.
NASS further appealed for patience, assuring that once all procedures are completed, Senator Natasha will be duly sworn in and accorded her full rights and privileges as a lawmaker.
Political observers note that the situation underscores the tension between legal battles and legislative timelines, often leaving constituents temporarily unrepresented.
The Assembly leadership, however, maintained that “the integrity of parliamentary procedures must not be compromised, no matter the pressure.”
