Heads of State and Government from across West Africa assembled at the Julius Maada Bio International Conference Centre on Sunday, July 19, 2026, for the official opening of the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority.
​The high-stakes mid-year summit comes at a pivotal moment for the sub-region, as leaders face pressing discussions on economic integration, regional security, and democratic stability.
​The summit’s agenda is packed with critical regional issues like the Economic Integration which aims at accelerating the single-currency roadmap and boosting intra-regional trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Security Cooperation among key highlights of the summit; Addressing ongoing counter-terrorism efforts in the Sahel and strengthening the regional standby force and reviewing transition timelines for member states currently under transitional leadership.
​Host President Julius Maada Bio welcomed delegations from across the 15-member bloc on Sunday morning. Representing Nigeria, the region’s largest economy is Vice President Kashim Shettima, who arrived at the Freetown International Airport in Lungi earlier in the day.
​In his opening remarks, ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray emphasized the need for collective action:
​”The challenges confronting our sub-region require undivided solidarity. From economic headwinds to security vulnerabilities, our strength lies entirely in our unity and shared resolve.”
​The summit is expected to conclude on Monday with the issuance of a final communique outlining the bloc’s strategic policy decisions and resolutions for the remainder of 2026.
