The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has said that it is unaware of the October 1 nationwide protest being organised by some aggrieved Nigerians in response to bad governance and hardship in the country.
Asked if the labour movement would be joining or supporting the planned protest, Spokesperson of NLC, Mr Benson Upah said : “We are not aware of any 1st October protest.”
Meanwhile, Organisers of the demonstration dubbed , #FearlessOctober1 protest have declared that they would not be deterred by the police, Department of State Services (DSS) or the military from proceeding with their plans.
They have formerly written to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, requesting security for the event, insisting that the right to protest is a fundamental freedom that they would not relinquish to any state authority.
The protest is set to coincide with Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day celebrations on Tuesday, October 1.
Juwon Sanyaolu, the National Coordinator of the Take It Back Movement, along with Damilare Adenola, the group’s Director of Mobilisation, said that efforts to rally support are already underway, with citizens mobilizing from various regions of the country to participate.
