Communities across Plateau, Katsina, and Kogi states are reeling from a devastating double blow of human conflict and natural disaster over the weekend. Separate incidents of violent attacks and destructive rainstorms have left dozens dead, hundreds displaced, and critical infrastructure in ruins, pushing local emergency responses to their limits.
​The fragile peace in Plateau State was shattered once again as armed assailants launched coordinated night raids on vulnerable farming communities. Local sources confirm that several villagers were killed, and dozens of homes were razed to the ground in the latest flare-up of communal violence.
​Survivors described scenes of sheer terror as they fled into the bushes under the cover of darkness. “We were woken up by the sound of heavy gunfire,” said Amos Luka, a resident of one of the affected Plateau villages. “By morning, our houses were ashes, and we were burying our neighbors. We have lost everything.”
​Security forces have deployed reinforcements to the area to restore order and deter further reprisals, but the atmosphere remains thick with tension as displaced residents gather in makeshift camps.
​Concurrently, in the northwest, suspected bandits launched fresh offensives against remote villages in Katsina State. The attackers, reportedly riding on motorcycles, outnumbered local vigilante groups, kidnapping several residents for ransom and carting away livestock and food reserves.
​The persistent violence has exacerbated an already dire humanitarian situation in the state, with local leaders calling on the Federal Government to overhaul its security strategy in the region.
​While Plateau and Katsina bled from violence, Kogi State faced the wrath of nature. A violent thunderstorm, characterized by torrential rains and fierce winds, tore through several communities, ripping roofs off houses, schools, and healthcare facilities.
Preliminary assessments indicate that hundreds of families have been rendered homeless. The downpour also caused localized flooding, washing away newly planted crops and threatening the upcoming harvest season.
