The Imo State Police Command has arrested and detained six of its officers after a viral video surfaced showing them brutally assaulting a civilian along a roadway in the state.
​The incident, which occurred on Monday, June 22, 2026, in Nduhobokwe, Uzoagba, within the Ikeduru Local Government Area, sparked widespread outrage across social media, prompting swift action from law enforcement leadership.
​In an official statement released on Wednesday by the State Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Henry Okoye, the command confirmed that a prompt review of the viral footage led to the immediate identification and apprehension of the operatives.
​The detained officers have been identified as Inspector Ugochukwu Ibe, Inspector Nwachi Chimezie, Sergeant Ugoezuhu Austin, Corporal Michael Obi, Corporal Ebuka Onwuegbu and Corporal Amos Sunny.
​The widely circulated video clip showed the armed officers using sticks to repeatedly flog an unidentified young man by the roadside. The victim was seen attempting to endure the assault before eventually fleeing the scene to escape further pain.
​Following the public outcry, the Commissioner of Police for the Imo State Command, CP Audu Garba Bosso, ordered an immediate, thorough investigation into the matter to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the severe misconduct.
​”The officers have been taken into custody, and disciplinary procedures have been initiated in line with the extant regulations of the Nigeria Police Force,” DSP Okoye stated.
​The command reiterated its strict stance on law enforcement accountability, emphasizing that the actions of the six officers directly contradict the core values, ethics, and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force.
​The police leadership reassured members of the public that the command remains fully committed to upholding professionalism and protecting citizens’ fundamental human rights, promising that appropriate disciplinary actions will be meted out at the conclusion of the investigation.
