The Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, Prof. Christian Anieke, has urged Southeast stakeholders to prioritise education and restore the region’s lost glory in the sector.
He made the appeal in Enugu during a press briefing marking his 25th priesthood anniversary.
The VC, who testified to God’s faithfulness and love in his life, emphasised the need to upgrade educational standards in the region.
“I want this region to excel in education.
“I am glad that our governor is driving this initiative through smart schools, pushing the boundaries of education in our region.
“Our region must reclaim its former glory, where we were unbeaten in education, producing luminaries like Chinua Achebe.
“Our governor is championing this cause, and our higher institutions must follow suit. Within the next five to 10 years, we can regain our former glory,” he said.
Anieke stated that as the university’s VC, he had been working tirelessly to establish the institution as a benchmark for other universities nationwide.
According to him, as catholics and christians, they have an obligation to set the pace for others by making the university a benchmark in academia and a reference point in higher education.
“Our target is not just to be the best, but to be a university that others emulate for its moral integrity, academic rigor, discipline and beauty,” he said.
The clergyman also urged universities to prioritise entrepreneurship training for students, beyond just awarding certificates.
He noted that his university had placed greater emphasis on entrepreneurship, setting an example for others.
