The governments of the United States and the United Kingdom, alongside the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the North, have commended the Federal Government and the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) for the arrest of a notorious terror kingpin believed to be behind several deadly attacks in northern Nigeria.
The terror suspect, whose identity was not disclosed for security reasons, was captured last week in a covert operation coordinated by Nigerian security forces under the supervision of the NSA, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
In separate statements released on Tuesday, the US and British missions in Abuja described the arrest as a “major breakthrough” in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism in Nigeria. They pledged continued support for counterterrorism efforts and intelligence sharing to ensure the dismantling of remaining terror networks.
“We commend the Nigerian government and security agencies for this bold step. The arrest marks a significant step toward justice for victims of terrorism and toward peace and security in the region,” the US Embassy stated.
Similarly, the British High Commission lauded the Nigerian authorities for what it termed a “decisive action” that underscores the country’s growing capacity to deal with security challenges.
On its part, the Northern CAN, through its chairman, Rev. John Hayab, praised the Federal Government and the NSA for demonstrating political will in tackling insurgency and banditry. He noted that the arrest would restore hope to communities that have suffered years of devastation at the hands of terrorists.
“This arrest sends a strong signal that no matter how long evil thrives, it will not escape justice. We encourage the government to pursue the prosecution diligently and ensure that victims’ voices are heard,” Hayab said.
Security experts believe the development could disrupt terrorist financing and recruitment chains in the region, though they caution that sustained pressure on criminal groups remains crucial to consolidating the gains.
The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that the suspect will face full prosecution and that further operations are underway to apprehend his accomplices and financiers.
