Severe financial penalties are preventing dozens of Nigerian citizens from returning home despite having served out their full jail terms in Saudi Arabian detention facilities, diplomatic authorities have disclosed.
​Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Dr. Yakubu N. Gambo, highlighted the growing humanitarian concern during a consultative meeting on Thursday, August 6, 2026, with the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
​According to an official statement issued by NiDCOM’s Media, Public Relations, and Protocol Officer, Violet Nwosu, the meeting focused on legal obstacles and emergency interventions for detained nationals across the Middle East.
​Ambassador Gambo emphasized that citizen welfare remains central to Nigeria’s foreign policy agenda:
​”We are confronted with challenges involving Nigerians in prisons and detention centres, including those who have completed their jail terms but are unable to return home because of outstanding fines,” Gambo stated.
​Adding further context to the scale of consular operations in the region, Nigeria’s Consul General in Jeddah, Ambassador Muazam I.J. Nayaya, noted that diplomatic staff regularly issue dozens of Emergency Travel Certificates (ETCs) daily to facilitate the repatriation of detained citizens. Ambassador Nayaya also acknowledged NiDCOM’s recent diplomatic intervention in resolving high-profile consular matters, including the case of Nigerian national Suleiman Alufa.
​To improve diplomatic response times and foster unity among nationals abroad, the Nigerian Mission in Saudi Arabia has announced key administrative directives:
The Embassy has mandated all Nigerian community groups, professional bodies, and trade associations in Saudi Arabia to organize under a single coordinating body.
Ambassador Gambo urged stakeholders to challenge broad criminnal stereotypes, pointing out that thousands of Nigerian doctors, engineers, academics, and traders live law-abiding, highly successful lives across the Kingdom.
Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa reiterated the need for Nigerians in Saudi Arabia to register on NiDCOM’s Diaspora Data Mapping Portal to ensure seamless state protection and rapid emergency tracking.
