A 22‑year‑old UNN student, Emmanuel Gambo, has been arrested by the Enugu State Police for the murder of fellow student, Deborah Sam‑Praise Ememem. Ememem’s body was discovered beneath a hotel bed in Obukpa, Nsukka, on June 16 after staff noticed a foul smell. Gambo, a second‑year Material and Metallurgical Engineering student, checked in with Ememem on June 14. A dispute reportedly erupted after she demanded an extra ₦15,000 beyond the ₦5,000 initially agreed, sparking a violent confrontation. Investigators say he strangled her, wrapped her body in a towel and a curtain, and hid her under the bed.
Police spokesperson SP Daniel Ndukwe confirmed the arrest, saying Gambo was traced to his lodge on July 2 after an intelligence‑led operation. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to the crime and led detectives to recover Ememem’s iPhone, tablet, earbuds, and a bottle of red wine, all dumped from the hotel room. Gambo reportedly used a false identity and phone number at check‑in, delaying initial investigation efforts.
Commissioner of Police Mamman Bitrus Giwa praised the CID team for the swift arrest and urged parents to monitor their children’s social activities. The case has now been transferred to the Homicide Section for comprehensive investigation and prosecution.
