The Kwara State Government, in collaboration with UNICEF, has launched a large-scale maternal health campaign targeting over 100,000 pregnant women across the state. Announced today in Ilorin, the program is designed to improve maternal and newborn outcomes by providing free antenatal care, community-based health education, nutrition support, and delivery services in underserved areas. The initiative is part of a broader push to tackle maternal mortality, which remains a serious challenge in rural Nigeria.
UNICEF’s representative at the launch said the agency is committed to supporting state-led health interventions that focus on vulnerable populations. The campaign will involve the deployment of mobile clinics and trained health workers to local communities, aiming to reach women who typically have limited access to health facilities. Kwara officials noted that the program aligns with the state’s development agenda and is expected to run in phases, beginning with high-risk local government areas.
