A lecturer at the University of Calabar (UniCal), Dr Bobby Ekpenyong, has urged state governments across Nigeria to emulate Cross River’s security model, describing the state as an example of effective security management.
Ekpenyong, a lecturer in the Department of Security Studies, made the call while speaking with journalists in Calabar, where he credited Governor Bassey Otu’s administration with significantly improving security and restoring public confidence.
According to him, the improved security situation has created a more conducive environment for businesses and investment, making it one of the administration’s most notable achievements.
“One major area of achievement I must credit His Excellency for is security,” he said.
The security expert recalled that before Otu assumed office, kidnapping and violent crimes were widespread, particularly along parts of the Biase Local Government Area, where commuters often avoided travelling due to frequent attacks.
He said the governor’s investment in security infrastructure and strategic deployment of resources had helped reduce criminal activities across the state.
“Today, we only hear of isolated kidnapping cases, and security agencies respond swiftly. Cross River has become a model for security, and a safe environment naturally attracts businesses and investors,” he added.
Ekpenyong also commended the Calabar Urban Development Authority for environmental sanitation efforts, including drainage clearance and waste evacuation, which he said have helped reduce flooding in the state capital.
Beyond security, he praised the administration’s road construction projects and described its recruitment process as transparent, noting that many residents secured employment through publicly advertised vacancies and online applications.
He further revealed that these developments influenced his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The lecturer urged residents to support Governor Otu for a second term, arguing that continuity would enable the administration to consolidate on its achievements in security, infrastructure and economic development.
