The African Policy and Research Consortium (APRC) has called for the nomination of former President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan for the position of United Nations (UN) Secretary-General.
APRC Convener, Prof. Edward Agbai, made the call in a statement to newsmen in Yenagoa on Friday.
Agbai urged President Bola Tinubu to nominate Jonathan for the UN top job following his experience and leadership qualities.
Agbai said that the UN required a leader like Jonathan who had proven executive experience, democratic credentials and the ability to manage complex global challenges.
He further said that Jonathan’s attitude to leadership as Nigeria’s President between 2010 and 2015 demonstrated his capacity for responsible leadership.
According to him, Jonathan’s acceptance of defeat in the 2015 presidential election marks a landmark contribution to democratic governance in Africa.
The APRC convener said that Jonathan’s peaceful transfer of power strengthened Nigeria’s democracy and reflected his commitment to constitutional order and national stability.
“Jonathan has continued to promote democracy, peace-building and conflict resolution across Africa since leaving office.
“His election observation and mediation assignments under the African Union, ECOWAS, COMESA, IGAD and the West African Elders Forum are testimonies of his experience in international duties,” he said.
He said that Jonathan had earned international respect for engaging political actors through dialogue, consultation and consensus building.
Agbai said that an African candidate would strengthen the continent’s influence in international decision-making and global governance.
He urged the Federal Government to begin diplomatic consultations with African countries and other international partners to build support for Jonathan’s candidacy.
