Uganda is mourning the death of David Owori, captain of Sports Club Villa, who was fatally attacked near his home in Kampala in a suspected robbery.
The 27-year-old defender and midfielder was attacked in the Makindye area on Tuesday night as he approached his residence. Witnesses said suspected robbers struck him with paving stones before taking his belongings and fleeing the scene.
Owori was rushed to a nearby medical facility and later transferred to a private hospital in Kampala, where he died from injuries sustained in the attack. SC Villa confirmed the death of its captain and described him as a leader, brother and friend.
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations also paid tribute to Owori, describing him as a leader and inspiration to a generation. Police said investigations were underway to identify those responsible, with officers processing the scene and gathering evidence.
Owori represented the Uganda national team and helped SC Villa win the Uganda Premier League title in 2024, their first league championship in two decades.
