Superior Ufoma and Elora Mene of Jade British International School on Thursday came first and second respectively in the 12th edition of the Bayelsa Spelling Bee competition.
The competition held in Yenagoa saw the first and second position winners going home with cash prizes of N300,000 and N100,000 respectively.
The source reports that Owei Tamaratonye from Ayakpo Comprehensive College came third and went home with a cash prize of N50,000.
The source also reports that the fourth position was won by Daniel Okara of the New Total Child school and Karina Ebi.
Speaking after the presentation of the prizes to the winners, the organisers of the competition said that the aim of the event was to create a platform for young people to excel, educationally and otherwise.
According to the Convener, Dr Ebidenyefa Tarila-Nikade, our mission is to create a platform for people to express themselves particularly young people, because we believe in the uniqueness of every individual.
“Our platform is a platform that is used to discover champions; so we create that opportunity for them to discover themselves.
“We take pride in growing champions and what the competition does in the life of every participant. It sharpens their ideas, improves their literary competence, especially written communication.
Tarila-Nikade added that the competition was expected to serve as motivation to help young people develop interest in events that were educationally advancing, as well as give them opportunities to discover their inner powers.
Meanwhile the first prize winner, Superior Ufoma, has commended the organisers and sponsors for the opportunity offered to students to express themselves through spelling.
She encouraged the losers to work harder, so they could win some other time.
