The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed concern over the United States’ recent revision of its visa reciprocity policy, which now limits the validity of B1, B2, F, and J category non-immigrant visas for Nigerian citizens to three months with a single entry. In an official statement issued on July 9 by Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, Nigeria described the move as a departure from the principles of equity and mutual respect expected between friendly nations.
The statement noted that the restriction places an undue burden on Nigerian travellers, including students, professionals, businesspersons, and families seeking cultural and educational exchange. It described the U.S. decision as misaligned with the longstanding cordial relations and strong people-to-people ties shared by both countries.
While affirming the United States’ sovereign right to set immigration policies, Nigeria urged Washington to reconsider the new visa rules in the spirit of global cooperation and shared responsibility. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that diplomatic efforts are ongoing to reach a fair resolution that reflects mutual interests.
