The U.S. Department of State has officially revised its visa policy for Nigerian citizens. Effective immediately (July 8, 2025), most non‑immigrant and non‑diplomatic visas such as tourist (B‑2), business (B‑1), student (F, M), and exchange (J) visas, will now be issued as single‑entry permits valid for just three months only. Any visas issued before July 8 will continue under their original terms.
The U.S. Embassy in Abuja explained that this change reflects visa reciprocity, aligning with how U.S. citizens are treated by other countries. The embassy emphasised that these policies are under continuous review and may be adjusted again based on Nigeria’s compliance with U.S. standards, particularly around secure travel documents, overstay management, and security information sharing.
Nigerian applicants are advised to double-check visa conditions, ensure their travel documents are up to date, and adhere strictly to terms and exit dates. Despite the tighter rules, U.S. officials stressed that this policy does not signal a shift in the broader U.S.-Nigeria relationship, affirming continued cooperation in business, education, and cultural exchanges.
