The United States government has announced an allocation of $27 million in humanitarian aid specifically designated for Nigeria, as part of its broader efforts to support Sub-Saharan Africa.
The U.S. Mission in Nigeria shared this update on Wednesday through its official X handle.
This funding is part of a larger $536 million aid package announced by Uzra Zeya, the U.S. Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, a few days ago.
The statement from the U.S. Mission read: “This week, @UnderSecStateJ announced nearly $536 million in additional humanitarian funding across Africa, including $27 million for Nigeria. The U.S. is committed to continued partnership, providing lifesaving assistance and protection to vulnerable people and generous host communities throughout the continent.”
The $536 million in humanitarian assistance was unveiled by Under Secretary Zeya during her recent visit to Ethiopia, where she participated in a humanitarian mission in the region.
According to Zeya, the funds are intended to alleviate the suffering of the most vulnerable populations and address the challenges faced by displaced individuals across host communities.
“Today, I’m proud to announce nearly $536 million in new humanitarian assistance from the United States. Through coordination with host country governments and international partners, this assistance aims to create durable solutions to ease suffering, build resilience, and resolve the plight of displaced and other vulnerable persons,” Zeya stated.
She also expressed gratitude to the generous host communities and vital partners across the continent, thanking them for protecting the most vulnerable so that all can live in dignity.
The United States and Nigeria have maintained strong ties through trade, bilateral relations, and investments in industry and technology.
The U.S. has frequently provided financial aid to Nigeria, particularly to states dealing with large numbers of displaced people, high poverty rates, and other economic challenges.
