The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security alert to American citizens in Nigeria ahead of a planned protest scheduled for Monday in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
According to the advisory released on Friday, the embassy warned U.S. nationals to exercise increased caution and avoid large gatherings, as the protest could lead to traffic disruptions or potential confrontations.
The demonstration, being organised under the banner #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, is expected to attract large crowds at Eagle Square and the Central Business District (CBD) in Abuja. The protest is reportedly aimed at demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja advises U.S. citizens to avoid areas surrounding Eagle Square and the Central Business District on Monday due to a planned protest,” the alert read. “Even peaceful demonstrations can turn confrontational and escalate into violence without warning.”
The embassy further encouraged Americans in the capital to monitor local news for updates, keep a low profile, and ensure their movements are discreet and necessary.
It also reminded U.S. citizens of the importance of enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security updates and facilitate contact in case of emergencies.
Security agencies in Abuja have reportedly been placed on alert to maintain order and prevent any breakdown of law and order during the demonstration.
While organisers insist the protest will be peaceful, concerns have been raised over possible disruptions to vehicular movement and commercial activities around key areas of the city.
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has not issued an official statement regarding the planned protest as of the time of reporting.
