A Nigerian man, Onomen Uduebor, also known as Onomen Onohi, has been sentenced to 40 months in prison by a U.S. District Court in Seattle for his involvement in a fraudulent tax scheme. Uduebor was convicted of stealing the identities of unsuspecting individuals and using the stolen information to file false tax returns and claim refunds from the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
According to prosecutors, Uduebor submitted dozens of bogus tax returns over a period of time, netting thousands of dollars in fraudulent refunds. His actions were part of a broader identity theft operation that exploited weaknesses in the tax filing system. In addition to his prison term, the court ordered Uduebor to pay restitution and undergo supervised release following his incarceration. U.S. authorities emphasized the seriousness of identity theft and tax fraud, warning that perpetrators will face stiff penalties under federal law.
