​Algeria and Morocco have become the first African nations to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil following dramatic 2–1 victories in their respective Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) quarter-finals on Saturday, August 8, 2026.
​The dual triumphs not only sent both North African sides through to the WAFCON semi-finals but also guaranteed their automatic qualification for next year’s expanded global showcase in South America.
​In the day’s opening quarter-final at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca (kick-off 18:00 WAT), Algeria staged a sensational comeback to defeat Côte d’Ivoire 2–1, securing their maiden Women’s World Cup appearance.
​The Ivorians took the lead in the 30th minute through Ines Konan, but the match turned on its head just before half-time when Côte d’Ivoire defender N’Sira Ouedraogo was shown a red card for a high boot on Algerian goalkeeper Chloé N’Gazi.
​Algeria capitalized on their numerical advantage in the second half of 58th Minute: Ines Khiri restored parity with a looping header over Aramatou Diakité and in the 64th minute, Amira Ould Braham completed the turnaround with a brilliant long-range strike into the bottom-right corner.
​”This is a historic moment for Algerian women’s football,” declared Farid Benstiti, head coach of the Algerian national team, during the post-match press briefing. “We showed resilience, discipline, and heart. Reaching our first World Cup is a dream realized for every player and fan back home.”
​Later that evening at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat (kick-off 21:00 WAT), host nation Morocco edged out defending champions South Africa 2–1 to clinch their second consecutive Women’s World Cup qualification.
​Addressing journalists at the post-match conference, Jorge Vilda, head coach of the Moroccan national team, praised his squad’s mentality:” Defeating the defending champions under this pressure proves how far this team has come since 2022,” Vilda said. “Securing back-to-back World Cup spots was our primary objective, and now we focus on lifting the continental trophy on home soil.”
​Speaking on behalf of the governing body, Confederation of African Football (CAF) Media Officer Luxolo September confirmed: “Under FIFA guidelines, all four WAFCON semi-finalists automatically earn direct entry to Brazil 2027. We congratulate Algeria on their historic debut qualification and Morocco for continuing their rapid rise in global football.”
The remaining two automatic African slots will be decided in Sunday’s quarter-final fixtures featuring Cameroon vs. Nigeria and Malawi vs. Ghana. Defeated quarter-finalists Côte d’Ivoire and South Africa will compete on August 13, 2026, for a spot in the FIFA Intercontinental Play-Off Tournament.
