Two persons were on Monday arraigned before a Magistrates’ Court in Makurdi over the alleged theft of a passenger’s luggage containing an HP laptop, power bank, clothes, shoes, and a smartwatch charger.
The defendants, Moses Iorungwa, 35, and Salome Atsaka, 20, both residents of Gariba Camp, Daudu in Benue, were charged by the police with conspiracy and theft. They pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Insp. Jonah Uletu, told the court that the complainant, Peter Enenche, reported the incident at the ‘E’ Division Police Station in Makurdi on May 21 after discovering that his shuttle bag had gone missing at Tipper Garage while preparing to travel to Abuja. He alleged that Iorungwa, who worked as a vehicle loader, had collected the luggage before it disappeared.
Uletu said police investigations led to Iorungwa’s arrest and that he allegedly confessed to committing the offence with Atsaka. He added that the alleged offences contravened Sections 97 and 289 of the Penal Code Laws of Benue, 2004, and informed the court that investigations were still ongoing.
The Magistrate, Mrs Ada Jack, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N100,000 each with one surety each in like sum and adjourned the case until July 13, 2026, for further mention.
