The trial of former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami (SAN), and his son, Abdulaziz Malami, was adjourned on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, to March 10, 2026.
The delay stems from the current AGF, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), officially taking over the prosecution from the Department of State Services (DSS).
The Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation (DPPF), Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), informed the court that the AGF’s office had just received the case file from the DSS and requires time to review the facts before proceeding.
Malami faces a five-count charge, including knowingly abetting terrorism financing (by allegedly refusing to prosecute known terrorism financiers during his tenure) and the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
Last week, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja granted Malami and his son bail in the sum of ₦200 million each, with stringent conditions including landed property in Maitama or Asokoro.
Malami’s lead counsel, Adedayo Adedeji (SAN), expressed frustration over the delay and warned that he would apply to have the charges struck out if the prosecution is not ready by the next date.
This is a significant moment in Nigerian legal history, as it’s rare to see a former chief law officer prosecuted by his immediate successor.
