The tragedy involving the NYSC member in Benue has sparked significant outrage across the country. It’s a sobering reminder of the dangers of jungle justice and the lack of regulation for local security outfits.

Ben Agir Une who was a serving corps member (2025/2026 batch) reportedly posted to Gombe State, was home in Benue on a short holiday/break when the incident occurred.

He was only a few weeks away from his final clearance and his Passing Out Parade (POP), which was scheduled for next month. The attack happened in the Mbajor/Anibros settlement in Buruku Local Government Area (LGA), Benue State.

Late Sunday night, a local vigilante group on patrol intercepted Ben. They suspected him of being a “bike snatcher” (motorcycle thief). Reports state that the vigilante leaders refused to let him identify himself. Even as he tried to present his NYSC ID card, they began beating him. He was eventually beaten into a coma.

The vigilantes reportedly realized the severity of his condition too late and rushed him to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

The Chairman of Buruku LGA, Raymond Aondoakura, confirmed that all members of the vigilante group involved in the assault have been arrested and handed over to the police for prosecution.

In response to the outcry, the local government has disbanded and suspended all vigilante activities in Buruku until a new, stricter regulatory framework is established.

It’s an incredibly heavy story, especially considering how close he was to finishing his service year. If you’re following this closely, the Benue State Police Command is expected to release a formal statement regarding the specific charges for the suspects this weekend.
