Nigeria’s Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, announced that the federal government has delivered over 500 health sector projects and commissioned three world-class oncology centres within two years of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Speaking at the inauguration of a state-of-the-art Oncology Centre at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) in Edo State on July 24, 2025, Pate described the achievements as a transformative shift in healthcare delivery, with three additional cancer centres under development in Zaria, Jos, and Lagos.
The 501 projects, spanning 61 federal tertiary hospitals and revitalized primary healthcare centres, include upgraded facilities like the Katsina Federal Teaching Hospital and the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital in Enugu, equipped with modern radiotherapy and chemotherapy units.
Pate credited Tinubu’s focus on ordinary Nigerians’ well-being and economic reforms for enabling a ₦2.48 trillion health budget in 2025, up from ₦1.62 trillion in 2024, reducing medical tourism by providing local access to advanced care. “This President decided to take the bull by the horns,” he said, noting that over 259 patients have benefited from UBTH’s cancer program.
