As political permutations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum, loyalists of former President Muhammadu Buhari have begun mobilising support for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, describing him as the most credible alternative to President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

At a consultative meeting held in Abuja on Thursday, several ex-ministers and close associates of Buhari declared that the APC under Tinubu had “derailed from its founding vision” and plunged the country into economic hardship.

Speaking on behalf of the group, a former cabinet member who served under Buhari accused the ruling party of “betraying Nigerians’ trust,” pointing to rising inflation, insecurity, and what he described as “a concentration of power in the hands of a few.”

“APC was founded on the promise of change, but today, Nigerians are more burdened than ever before,” he said. “Atiku Abubakar has shown consistency, resilience, and the capacity to rescue the nation. That is why many of us who worked with Buhari are rallying behind him ahead of 2027.”

The group further alleged that Tinubu’s administration had sidelined Buhari’s northern base, warning that the region would not hesitate to align with the opposition if the trend continued.

Reacting, the APC dismissed the claims as “empty blackmail,” insisting that President Tinubu remained focused on reforms that would reposition Nigeria.

“The so-called Buhari loyalists do not speak for the former president, and Nigerians can see the progress being made under APC,” a party spokesperson said.

Political analysts believe the move signals deepening cracks within the APC, raising questions about whether Buhari’s political machinery will play a decisive role in 2027.
