President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has warned against the growing threat of corruption in Nigeria’s public institutions, urging public officers to uphold integrity, strengthen accountability, and commit themselves to leaving a legacy of national development.
The President issued the caution on Sunday at the Nigeria Excellence Awards in Public Service (NEAPS), held at the State House Banquet Hall in Abuja.
Addressing an audience comprising top government officials, award recipients, and stakeholders in governance, Tinubu expressed concern that corruption remains a major obstacle to effective leadership globally.
He noted that unethical practices such as nepotism, cronyism, political patronage, and weak accountability mechanisms continue to erode public trust and impair the capacity of institutions to deliver quality services.
Tinubu emphasized that such tendencies, if not decisively addressed, pose a long-term threat to national progress.
According to him, public service must be anchored on transparency, fairness, and a genuine commitment to the welfare of citizens. He stressed that his administration is determined to champion reforms that reinforce these values and create a culture where merit, professionalism, and ethical conduct are rewarded.
The President commended the NEAPS initiative for recognizing outstanding contributions to public service, adding that honouring diligent officials would inspire others to pursue excellence. He encouraged recipients to view their awards as a call to greater responsibility and a reminder that leadership is both a privilege and a trust.
Tinubu reaffirmed his government’s resolve to strengthen institutions, enhance oversight mechanisms, and sustain efforts to eradicate corruption at all levels.
