President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to confirm the appointment of the immediate past Vice Chancellor of Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fashina, as a non-career ambassador and high commissioner-designate, marking another significant step in the administration’s efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic representation abroad.
The request was conveyed through a letter addressed to the upper chamber of the National Assembly and read during Wednesday’s plenary session by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
In the correspondence, President Tinubu urged lawmakers to give the nomination prompt consideration in accordance with constitutional provisions governing diplomatic appointments. The nomination is expected to undergo the Senate’s screening and confirmation process before the professor can formally assume diplomatic responsibilities on behalf of Nigeria.
According to the letter, the President said the nomination was made pursuant to the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and reflects his administration’s commitment to appointing qualified individuals to strategic national assignments.
“In accordance with the provisions of section 121, subsections 2, 3, and 4 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended, I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate the nomination of Professor Abayomi Sunday-Fashina as non-career ambassador/high commissioner-designate,” the President stated in the communication read before senators.
The nomination places Fashina among a select group of distinguished Nigerians chosen to represent the country’s interests in foreign missions. As a non-career ambassador-designate, he is expected to bring his extensive academic, administrative and leadership experience to Nigeria’s diplomatic service if eventually confirmed by the Senate.
Fashina is widely known in academic circles for his tenure as Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, where he oversaw various institutional reforms, infrastructural developments and academic initiatives aimed at strengthening the university’s standing among higher institutions in Nigeria.
