President Bola Tinubu on Friday announced the renaming of the completed Institute of Petroleum Studies in Kaduna as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology, in honour of the late military leader’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
The announcement was made during the President’s nationwide broadcast to commemorate Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day celebration, where he paid tribute to individuals whose sacrifices and commitment helped shape the country’s democratic journey.
Tinubu said the decision to rename the institution was part of a broader effort by his administration to recognise and immortalise key figures who played significant roles in Nigeria’s transition from military rule to democratic governance.
According to the President, the late Yar’Adua remains one of the most influential personalities in Nigeria’s political history, whose commitment to democratic ideals and national development continues to inspire generations of Nigerians.
“Today, it is fitting that we honour those whose sacrifices laid the foundation for the democracy we enjoy. As part of this recognition, I have approved the renaming of the completed Institute of Petroleum Studies, Kaduna, as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology,” Tinubu declared.
The President noted that while many Nigerians remember Yar’Adua for his distinguished military career, his contributions extended beyond the barracks into the political transformation of the nation.
Yar’Adua, who served as Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters and the de facto second-in-command during the military administration of General Olusegun Obasanjo between 1976 and 1979, was widely credited with supporting the process that culminated in the successful handover of power to a civilian government in 1979.
Following his retirement from the military, he remained active in national affairs and became one of the leading voices advocating democratic reforms during periods of military rule.
His political influence expanded through the activities of the Peoples Front of Nigeria, a political movement that produced several notable political leaders and shaped the country’s democratic discourse in the years preceding the return to civilian rule in 1999.
Yar’Adua’s commitment to democratic principles was particularly evident during the military era of the 1990s when he became involved in pro-democracy activities that challenged authoritarian governance.
His activism eventually led to his arrest and imprisonment after being accused of participating in an alleged coup plot against the regime of General Sani Abacha.
