President Bola Tinubu in a significant move to honour Nigeria’s socio-political icon, has renamed the Federal University of Education in Kano the Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education.
According to a statement issued by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the decision was informed by the necessity to immortalize the legacy of Alhaji Sule, who died in 2017, and inspire younger generations with his values of integrity, patriotism, character, and nationalism.
Sule was a distinguished figure in Nigeria’s history, serving as the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and holding various key positions in government, including Minister of Mines and Power and Chief Whip of the Federal House of Representatives.
President Tinubu believes that by honouring Sule’s contributions, Nigeria can foster a culture of excellence among its youth.
“The renaming of this institution is a testament to the enduring impact of Ambassador Sule’s life and work. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations to uphold the values of integrity, patriotism, character, and nationalism,” the statement read, in part.
The Federal University of Education, Kano, is one of seven specialized universities of education under the Federal Government, initially owned by the Kano State Government.
It will continue to play a pivotal role in training teachers and strengthening Nigeria’s education sector.
This move comes as part of broader efforts by President Tinubu’s administration to recognize and honor Nigeria’s historical figures while focusing on educational development and youth empowerment.
The administration has also implemented various programmes aimed at enhancing youth employment and capability, reflecting its commitment to national development through education and economic growth.
