President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday joined Nigerians from all walks of life to celebrate retired Defence Minister, General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, on the occasion of his 87th birthday, describing him as a “distinguished statesman, soldier and gentleman” whose life story is woven into the fabric of Nigeria’s post-independence journey.
In a heartfelt goodwill message personally signed by the President, Tinubu commended the elder statesman for his unwavering loyalty to the country, noting that Danjuma has served Nigeria with honour both in moments of war and in times of peace. According to the President, General Danjuma’s contributions to nation-building began from his early days in the military, through the turbulent years when Nigeria’s unity was severely tested.
Tinubu observed that Danjuma “stood firm when unity was fragile, and the path ahead was uncertain,” playing key roles that helped stabilize the nation at critical times. The President celebrated Danjuma not only for his military exploits but also for his impact in public service, philanthropy, and national dialogue.
He acknowledged the retired general’s consistent voice on issues of security, governance, and national cohesion, describing him as a man whose counsel has remained valuable across generations. As he marked his 87th birthday, Tinubu prayed for renewed strength and continued good health for the former Defence Minister, thanking him for what he called “a lifetime dedicated to Nigeria’s progress.”
The President urged citizens to emulate Danjuma’s patriotism, integrity, and commitment to a unified nation, adding that the story of Nigeria would be incomplete without acknowledging his contributions.
