President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, on his unanimous election as Chairperson of the World Customs Organisation (WCO) Council, describing the achievement as a major win for Nigeria’s global image and economic reforms.
Adeniyi was elected on Saturday in Brussels, becoming the first Nigerian to head the WCO Council in its 73-year history. The WCO, which comprises 186 member nations, plays a key role in shaping customs cooperation and standards across the world. According to a statement by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu commended Adeniyi and the entire Nigeria Customs Service for earning such global recognition. He called it a “significant milestone” for Nigeria, especially with the nation’s flag now flying high at the WCO headquarters.
President Tinubu urged Adeniyi to exceed expectations in his new international role and expressed gratitude to the WCO Secretary-General and Council members for their support. He also pledged the federal government’s full backing throughout Adeniyi’s tenure. The Nigerian Customs boss succeeds Edward Kieswetter, the South African Revenue Service Commissioner, and will officially assume duties on July 1. The WCO Council serves as the highest decision-making body of the global customs body, driving innovation and policy direction across all member states.
