President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday commissioned the newly completed Arterial Road N5, now named Obafemi Awolowo Way, in Abuja, describing the project as part of efforts to improve transportation infrastructure and enhance connectivity within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The 4.4-kilometre road links Life Camp Junction to Ring Road III (RR3) in the Dape District and is expected to ease traffic congestion, improve access to developing districts, and support economic activities across the area.
President Tinubu, who was represented at the commissioning ceremony by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, said the project reflects the administration’s commitment to infrastructure development under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
He urged residents to protect and make proper use of the facility, describing it as a public asset designed to improve the quality of life of citizens and support the growth of the nation’s capital. Constructed by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, the project includes major drainage infrastructure, box culverts, a bridge crossing, and upgraded intersections aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing travel time along the corridor.
Speaking at the event, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, said the road forms part of a broader programme of infrastructure delivery across the FCT. According to him, the ongoing commissioning exercise will cover projects in both the city centre and satellite communities, reflecting the administration’s commitment to balanced development across the territory.
Wike said the completion of the road would improve movement between districts, open up new areas for residential and commercial development, and reduce pressure on existing transport routes. Officials said the road also complements other recently completed infrastructure projects, including sections of the Outer Southern Expressway, which are intended to strengthen Abuja’s transportation network.
The commissioning of Obafemi Awolowo Way is among several projects scheduled for inauguration as part of activities marking the third anniversary of the Tinubu administration.
Residents and commuters in the affected districts are expected to benefit from improved connectivity and shorter travel times following the opening of the road to traffic.
