Notable political activist and purist, Aisha Yesufu, has taken umbrage at what she called “the labeling of the Igbo people as bigots.”
Expressing her concerns in a video shared on her X account on Saturday (yesterday, August 31), Yesufu criticised the current Nigerian government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for perpetuating bigotry while government officials and agents continuously accusing the Igbo of the offence.
“When the Igbo supported Obasanjo, they were not bigots. When they supported and voted overwhelmingly for Yar’Adua, they were not bigots. When they supported Jonathan, they were not bigots. When they voted overwhelmingly for Atiku, they were not bigots. It is only when the Igbo supported and voted for Peter Obi that they are now being called bigots,” she sneered.
Yesufu accused Tinubu of bringing negative influences to Nigeria by introducing bigotry into the governance and mentality of the nation.
 She expressed concern over the selective judgment in the case of a woman who threatened to poison members of a certain tribe, questioning why similar threats made by others in the past have not been prosecuted.
She further stated that the fear of Peter Obi’s rising popularity is bringing the issue of bigotry to the forefront.
“There are people who are now ready to support Peter Obi. There are people who are saying, indeed, he has what it takes. The people are going to give him support. There are people who gave Tinubu the votes—not enough to win the election, but to rig the election.”
Yesufu also expressed confidence that, given the current situation in the North with issues of bad governance, the people there might prefer to support a Christian/Christian ticket over a Muslim/Muslim ticket.
