President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Senator Magnus Abe and an energy expert, Adegbite Ebiowei Adeniji, as board chairmen of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), respectively.
The President has also requested the Senate to confirm their appointments. This was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, President Tinubu, in two separate letters addressed to the Senate, sought legislative confirmation for 21 nominees to serve on the boards of the two key petroleum-sector regulatory agencies established under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).
The nominees, the statement said, are expected to strengthen the governance, oversight and effective regulation of Nigeria’s upstream, midstream and downstream petroleum operations in line with the objectives of the PIA.
President Tinubu noted that the appointments are part of ongoing efforts to reposition the oil and gas sector, enhance transparency, boost investor confidence and ensure efficient management of the nation’s petroleum resources.
The Senate is expected to consider the President’s request and commence the screening and confirmation process in line with legislative procedures.
