President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Mathew Adamu as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University, formerly the University of Abuja, for a 90-day term starting August 11, 2025. The announcement, detailed in a letter dated August 8, 2025, from the Federal Ministry of Education and signed by Permanent Secretary Abel Enitan, confirms Adamu’s role to succeed Professor Patricia Manko Lar, whose six-month tenure as Acting Vice-Chancellor ends after fostering academic stability and initiating the selection process for a substantive Vice-Chancellor, according to a statement by Acting Registrar Roseline Adakayi. Adamu, a distinguished veterinary scholar from Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, is tasked with supporting the Governing Council, led by Senator Olanrewaju Tejuoso, to finalize the appointment of a permanent Vice-Chancellor.
A Fellow of the College of Veterinary Surgeons of Nigeria and a Knight of St. Mulumba, he rose to full Professor in 2019, specializing in Veterinary Parasitology and Entomology. His career includes leadership roles such as Director of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (2018–2023) and Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Makurdi, alongside private practice and research at the Nigeria Institute for Trypanosomiasis Research. The university community expressed gratitude to Lar for her leadership and wished Adamu success in steering the institution forward, as noted by Adakayi.This marks the second acting Vice-Chancellor appointment since Professor Aisha Maikudi’s removal in February 2025, reflecting ongoing transitions at the university.
