Exactly 80 years and 12 days ago, on December 1, 1944, hundreds of African soldiers who had helped France defeat the Nazis in World War II, were massacred by the French army. Their offence? They rightfully asked for their salary!
So, what does Nigeria think it is doing by going into any form of pact with an army, with such history of treachery?
On their march to independence, after the Haitian revolutionaries defeated the French army, led by Toussaint L’Ouverture, the French called for a peace meeting. Rather foolishly, Toussaint attended that meeting, unprotected, thinking he was dealing with men of honour.
He was immediately abducted and taken to France, where he was slowly tortured to death by means of cold and starvation. Toussaint gave up the ghost on April 7, 1803. And to date, Haiti has yet to recover from the fallouts of that revolution of August 21, 1791 to January 1, 1804.
Under whatever guise, the Nigerian government must never sign any pact with France. Let us think twice and learn from history, or else our unborn generations will never forgive us for what is bound to happen to our country, under a pact with the French.
There couldn’t possibly be any form of covenant between the lion and the antelope. It is totally unnatural.
