The Labour Party (LP) in Nigeria has officially shifted its 2027 general election primaries to Saturday, May 30, 2026.
​This decision, announced by National Publicity Secretary Ken Asogwa, consolidates the various primaries (Presidential, Governorship, and Legislative) into a single day to avoid clashing with major national and religious observances.
​The party initially had a tiered schedule that overlapped with two significant events; The original date for Governorship and State Assembly primaries was May 27, which coincides with the 2026 Eid el-Kabir celebrations.
The original date for Presidential and National Assembly primaries was May 29, which marks the anniversary of the inauguration of elected officials.
​By moving the entire exercise to May 30, the party aims to ensure “spiritual significance” and “national importance” are respected, allowing members and aspirants to participate in holidays without political distractions.
This adjustment is a strategic move to align with the INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission) deadline, which requires all parties to conclude their primaries by the end of May 2026.
