An impeachment moves by the APC-led House of Assembly against the Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.
In January 2026, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf officially defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). While the Governor and 22 members of the State House of Assembly made the move to “align with the federal government,” the Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, refused to defect. He chose to remain loyal to the NNPP and its leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
The Kano State House of Assembly has today formally initiated impeachment proceedings against Deputy Governor Gwarzo.
At least 38 lawmakers have reportedly signed the impeachment notice, easily meeting the constitutional threshold.
The Assembly cited “gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.”
Diversion of local government funds (totaling roughly ₦462 million) while he served as Commissioner for Local Government.
Alleged unauthorized payments of ₦726 million for “special assignments.”
Conflict of interest regarding a ₦440 million contract involving Novomed Pharmaceuticals.
While the charges are official, the move is widely seen as a political “cleansing.” Following the Governor’s move to the APC, the administration has pressured Gwarzo to resign or defect. His refusal created a “divided executive,” with the APC now seeking
to install a Deputy Governor who is a member of their party.
The Deputy Governor has previously denied these allegations, with his supporters maintaining that he is being victimized for his loyalty to the Kwankwasiyya movement and the NNPP
