The Sunmonu Animashaun Family has extended condolences to residents, traders, and business owners affected by the devastating fire that swept through Lagos Island in late December.

In a statement released on Sunday, jointly signed by Mr. Rafiu Jawando, Acting Chairman, Board of Trustees, and Otunba Hakeem Oladipo Animashaun, Secretary, Board of Trustees, the family described the incident as “horrifying and tragic.”

The fire, which started on December 24, 2025, at Shitta-Bey Court, also known as Great Nigeria House, quickly spread to the family’s Agbole Animashaun residence and other neighboring buildings. The statement further noted that the blaze crossed the road, completely razing the historic Shitta-Bey Mosque.

The family urged the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) to carry out an assessment of the affected structures to determine the extent of the damage and prevent further risks.

“We recall this incident with heavy hearts, full of sadness and sorrow,” the statement said, highlighting the widespread impact of the fire on both residential and commercial properties.

The Sunmonu Animashaun Family called on authorities and the community to support recovery efforts and ensure safety measures are strengthened to avert similar disasters in the future.
